Japanese Shrine, Town Hall, Kolonia

The Japanese Shrine in Kolonia was originally built in the early 1920’s, to serve as a place of prayer and worship. To Ponapeans, it commemorates the Japanese era, in this Districts development and history, and serves as a grim reminder of the time segregation was the order of the day in Ponape. The Shrine is located within the site of the Japanese controlled elementary school for Japanese dependents only.
